Disney’s Tomorrowland Movie Review

May 22, 2015 by brandie 3 Comments

Planning to see Disney’s Tomorrowland movie? Here’s our thoughts about Disney’s latest family sci-fi movie.

Disney's Tomorrowland Movie Review

One of the first movies of the summer season has opened in theaters: Disney’s Tomorrowland! Earlier this week, David and I headed off to the media screening of the movie and I’m eager to share my thoughts with all of you.

As you might know, Tomorrowland is a science fiction movie starring George Clooney as Frank, a former boy-genius, and Britt Robertson as Casey, a bright, optimistic teen with scientific curiosity. Together, they embark on a mission to change the world, by traveling to “Tomorrowland.”

Here’s the trailer:

Before attending our screening, I had watched that trailer a few times and also some featurettes. Just by those, I was excited. Not to mention, I’m rather fond of George Clooney and the Tomorrowland area of Disneyland has always been one of my most favorite parts of the park.

Overall, I did find Tomorrowland enjoyable and I loved the message. The movie honors those of us who ask questions and who want to know why and how, and who want to challenge the way things are. It’s a movie about hope, optimism, and the power of believing, which I think we can never have too much of.

The movie is visually stunning, no doubt about that. If I picked one favorite part about Tomorrowland it would be the technical side of it all. The scenes of Tomorrowland make me want to go there.

But, there was some things about the story that left me feeling a bit confused, feeling like I had missed something, perhaps key parts of the story. I’m still not entirely sure if this was just me or if others felt the same way, but I did leave wanting to know more. I guess I’m a bit like Casey in the movie: full of questions.

There was other things I wanted too. I thought there would be a connection between the Tomorrowland movie and Tomorrowland at the park. I also wished that we could have seen more of the day-to-day living in Tomorrowland: how is food there? how do the homes look? I wanted more of that. These were things I had expected to see.

No, the movie isn’t perfect, but nevertheless, I think families will enjoy it and it will make a fun family outing. To us, it was entertaining enough that I’m sure we’ll be purchasing it it when it comes out on Blu-ray. A clear indication that we will be watching it again.

My kids are 4,7, and 9. Do you think they would enjoy it or should we sit this one out? They all love Star Wars- as a reference for the level of suspense they can handle. I’d love to see it.

Hi Kelly! So, as I probably don’t have to tell you, this is definitely NOT Star Wars. I would say turn Star Wars down 60%(?) and you probably have Tomorrowland. This movie does have action and some fight scenes and it keeps going, but there is times when things slow down and, well, gets a bit mellow. Honestly, I could see a 4 year old getting antsy. I would imagine the 7 & 9 year old would do fine. But, there was a boy behind us about that age and he seemed to do great — never heard a peep from him, other than a couple bathroom breaks.
