If you had a chance to visit Disney California Adventure Park in 2018 during Pixar Fest, you might have seen — or eaten — the Mike Wazowski Monster Mallow Donut that was sold at Schmoozies in Hollywoodland.
The Mike Wazowski Monster Mallow Donut was a big & tall donut-croissant combination with stacks of flaky layers, filled with marshmallow fluff. The top of the donut was decorated with green icing, with black icing was drawn on to Mike’s smile. A marshmallow was added to the center of the donut with black icing to create Mike’s eye and more marshmallow pieces were added to the top of his “head” to create his horns.
Since you can no longer purchase the Mike Wazowski Monster Mallow Donut at Disney California Adventure Park, we’re sharing how to make your own inspired version at home!
These donuts are very easy to make with your favorite cake mix and a few other simple ingredients. They are fun for Monsters Inc birthday parties, movie nights, or even an after-school surprise!
Mike Wazowski Donuts Ingredients
To make these Monsters Inc Mike Wazowski Donuts, you will need:
- Boxed Cake Mix – any flavor, we used a yellow cake mix
- Eggs & Oil
- Green Candy Melts
- Large Marshmallows
- Black Decorating Icing
- Wilton Donut Pan
The candy melts, decorators icing, and donut pan may not be able in your local grocery store. If you don’t already have these items, you can find them online, at mass retailers like Walmart or Target, or stores such as Michael’s or Joann Craft Stores.
To make your Monsters Inc donuts, you’ll first mix together the cake mix, water, oil, and eggs according to the cake mix box.
Once the batter is mixed up, you’re ready to fill the donut pan. Filling a donut pan can be a bit tricky, but to make this easier, we recommend placing the donut cake batter in a zipper-style plastic bag (quart size is best). Close the bag and then snip off a small bit of one of the corners. Then, squeeze the batter through the hole and into each section of the greased donut pan, making sure not to fill all the way to the top.
If you don’t have zipper-style bags, you can also spoon the batter into each donut section.
Once the donuts are baked and cooled, you are ready to decorate them to look like our favorite one-eyed monster, Mike Wazowski!
First, start with the marshmallows for Wazowski’s horns. Cut the top off of a large marshmallow and snip that top and the bottom in half and set aside. This will create two sets of horns.
Check the donuts to make sure that the center hole is large enough to insert a marshmallow into the hole. If needed, using a spoon to enlarge the hole slightly. You will want the marshmallow to fit snugly into the donut hole.
Melt the green candy melts in microwave according to the package directions or use a Wilton Melting Pot.
Dip the top of the donuts in the green melts and place them on a cooling rack. Lifting and tapping the cooling rack on your kitchen counter can help to smooth the melts on the donuts and eliminate any air bubbles.
TIP: If you want to include marshmallow fluff in the center of your donut, like the Mike Wazowski Monster Mallow Donut at Pixar Fest, just cut your donut in half crosswise, and spread the bottom cut part of your donut with marshmallow fluff. Dip the top portion only in the green melts and place the top on top of the fluff (like your making a sandwich). Proceed with the decorating steps.
To attach Mike’s marshmallow horns, you’ll need to add them to the donuts before the melts have set (hardened). The melts will start to set fairly quickly, so be prepared to add the marshmallows horns very soon after dipping the tops. After adding the horns, press a large marshmallow into the middle of each donut.
Finally, use the black icing to draw a small black circle in the center of the marshmallow in the donut hole to create Mike’s eye. Finish your decorating by adding a smile with the icing.
Now you have your own Monsters Inc donuts for a party, movie night, or fun snacking!
